Type a sale or a purchase and the boxes fill in.

These boxes are worked out only from the figures you type in. This is a summary to help you fill in your own GST return, it isn't a filed return and it isn't tax advice.

In Invio, these fill in from your invoices

You do not type the figures. Invio works out GST on sales from your invoices and GST on purchases from your expenses for the period you pick, in Reports, Tax & Export.

What you get, and where it stops

This page does the arithmetic of the return. Here is what it covers and where your own records and your accountant take over.

What it does

  • Works out Box 5 to Box 15 of GST101A from the sales and purchases you type in, with GST included.
  • Takes zero-rated sales out of Box 7 before it works out GST on your sales.
  • Uses the form's own rule, times 3 divided by 23, and rounds to the nearest cent.
  • Adds your debit and credit adjustment totals (Box 9 and Box 13) and shows whether Box 15 is GST to pay or a refund.

What it does not do

  • Does not file a return. You file with Inland Revenue yourself, in myIR, through your accounting software, or through your accountant.
  • Does not decide what belongs in each box. Whether a sale is zero-rated, or whether you can claim GST on a purchase, is for you and your accountant.
  • Does not work out your adjustments. Use IRD's adjustments sheet (IR372) and type the two totals in.
  • Does not save or send anything. Close the page and your figures are gone.

If you want the record kept

In Invio you do not type these figures. Invio works out GST on sales from your invoices and GST on purchases from your expenses for the period you pick, on the payments basis or the invoice basis, in Reports, Tax & Export, with downloads of both lists for your accountant. It is a summary to help you fill in your own return. See what each plan adds

Which figures go in Box 5 and Box 11?

It depends on the accounting basis you file on. Type in the figures for that basis; the boxes work the same way on all three.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the boxes on an NZ GST return?
On IRD's GST101A return, Box 5 is your total sales and income including GST and any zero-rated sales, and Box 6 is the zero-rated part of that. Box 7 is Box 5 minus Box 6, and Box 8 is Box 7 times 3 divided by 23, which is the GST on your sales. Box 9 is any debit adjustments, and Box 10 is Box 8 plus Box 9. On the purchases side, Box 11 is your total purchases and expenses including GST, Box 12 is Box 11 times 3 divided by 23, Box 13 is any credit adjustments, and Box 14 is Box 12 plus Box 13. Box 15 is the difference between Box 10 and Box 14: if Box 10 is larger it is GST to pay, and if Box 14 is larger it is a refund.
Why are the amounts multiplied by 3 and divided by 23?
Because the amounts in Box 5 and Box 11 already include 15% GST. 15% is 3/20, so GST-inclusive prices are 23/20 of the GST-exclusive price, and the GST inside any inclusive total is 3/23 of it. That is exactly what the form tells you to do in Box 8 and Box 12. This page rounds the result to the nearest cent.
Do I put sales in Box 5 with or without GST?
With. IRD's guide says to add up all sales and income for your taxable activity, including any zero-rated supplies, and that this includes the GST amount of the sales and income. Purchases and expenses in Box 11 are also entered including GST.
What counts as zero-rated?
Zero-rated sales are charged GST at 0%. IRD's guide gives exported goods, selling a business as a going concern and some sales of land as examples. They go in Box 5 along with your other sales, and again in Box 6, so they come out of Box 7 before GST on sales is worked out. Whether a particular sale is zero-rated is a question for IRD or your accountant, not for this page.
What goes in Box 9 and Box 13?
Adjustments. IRD's GST adjustments calculation sheet (IR372) works out the GST on them: its debit adjustments total goes in Box 9 and its credit adjustments total goes in Box 13. The sheet lists items such as private use of business goods and bad debts recovered on the debit side, and bad debts written off and business use of private goods on the credit side. This page does not work adjustments out for you; type the GST totals from the sheet into the two adjustment fields.
Does it matter if I use the payments basis or the invoice basis?
Yes, it changes which sales and purchases belong in the period. On the payments basis you include what customers paid you and what you paid suppliers in the period. On the invoice basis you include what you invoiced and what suppliers invoiced you, even if it has not been paid yet. The boxes and the 3/23 arithmetic are the same either way, so type in the figures for your basis. The table above has the detail.
Does this file my GST return?
No. It works out the boxes from the figures you type so you can check the maths. You file your return with Inland Revenue yourself in myIR, through your accounting software, or through your accountant. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere, and it is a summary to help you fill in your own return, not tax advice.

Skip the typing at return time.

Use this page to see how the boxes fit together. When you invoice in Invio, GST on sales and GST on purchases build up from your invoices and expenses, so the figures are there when your return is due.
